Lamp stolen from Milford’s Riverside Cemetery still missing

MILFORD – The old lamp that was stolen recently from the Riverside Cemetery has not been recovered.

The lamp, which dates from the early 1900s, was on the top of the monument of Josiah W. and Elizabeth Pillsbury.

Mary Dickson, in the Milford Department of Public Works office, said it probably took at least two strong men to lift the lamp off the monument.

The base the lamp was sitting on is also gone.

“It was heavy, heavy, heavy,” she said.

It is valued between $12,000 and $15,000.

The Pillsburys were the parents of Albert Pillsbury, who donated the South Street building where the Pillsbury Home got its start.

Albert also gave the town the Community House, on the corner of Union Street and Union Square.

The Pillsburys also paid for the cemetery’s gates, Dickson said.
