Have a happy (and safe) holiday
Ah, the holiday season. It’s wonderful, isn’t it? Let’s keep it wonderful by keeping it safe.
A recent press release from Allstate Insurance reminded us that fire poses a major threat during the holidays and one of the major causes of fires is candles.
“Christmas week is among the top three weeks for candle-related (insurance) claims,” the release said. “The median cost for candle-related claims is almost $50,000.”
But there are other problems:
? Turkey fryers.
? Fireworks around New Year’s Eve.
? Christmas trees that often catch fire because they aren’t properly watered or because of problems with lights.
Here are some things the insurance company recommends we do to be safer:
? Install new batteries in smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.
? Carefully dispose of cooking grease.
? Never leave candles unattended and keep them out of the reach of children.
? If you buy a natural tree, make sure it’s fresh. If you buy an artificial tree, make sure it’s fire resistant. Keep all trees away from heat sources.
? Throw away broken holiday lights and don’t overload outlets.
? Only lights and cords specified for outdoor use should be used outside.
So be safe, be happy.
