More apartments could mean more police officers in Milford

MILFORD – The Pine Valley Mill building is being turned into a 50-unit affordable apartment complex, and an affordable apartment complex could be built off of Nashua Street and some kind of multi-family housing off South Street.

How will an influx of new people affect the police department, a member of the town Advisory Budget Committee asked Police Chief Michael Viola at a Nov. 20 committee meeting to review the department’s budget proposals for next year.

“We have to address it as it comes,” Viola said, but more apartments might mean more officers will be needed, he said.

Police will also try to develop relationships with the people managing the complexes. They did that on Powers Street, where there is a large apartment complex, the chief said, “and I’ve seen a big reduction in issues.”
