Drug charges land Milford man in jail again

MILFORD – A local man previously convicted of possessing controlled drugs has been jailed for possession of cocaine.

Carl L. Varney, 57, of 3 Ponemah Hill Road, Milford, was arrested on Thursday, Dec. 5, for possession of cocaine and possession of drugs in a motor vehicle.

According to court documents, Varney was convicted of possession of controlled drugs in Hillsborough County Superior Court in April 2010 and in June 2012.

When he was arrested on Dec. 5, Varney was out on bail after his Oct. 20 arrest for allegedly having heroin at the River Card Room at Granite Town Plaza in Milford. Police were called to the charity gambling parlor after an employee found a bag of a drug later identified as heroin on the floor after a surveillance video showed Varney had dropped it while walking past a card table, documents said.

Then on Dec. 5, Varney was arrested on South Street in Milford for allegedly having cocaine in his motor vehicle. He was charged with possession of a controlled drug after having been previously convicted of possession, a Class A felony. He was also charged with possession of drugs in a motor vehicle, a Class A misdemeanor.

Varney was taken to the Hillsborough County House of Corrections in lieu of $75,000 cash bail, and he is scheduled for a probable cause hearing on all three charges on Monday, Dec. 16.
