Souhegan musical opens next Thursday
AMHERST – “Once Upon a Mattress” will storm the moats of the Souhegan stage on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, March 27, March 28 and March 29 at 7 p.m. each night.
The musical version of the “Princess and the Pea” fairy tale set in a farcical medieval kingdom with a domineering Queen Aggravain (Alyssa Lederhos) and a henpecked, mute King Sextimus the Silent (Ryan Long) and their desperate son, Prince Dauntless (Michael Robicheau), who longs to marry a princess. Along comes Winnifred (Hannah Whitney), who swims the moat to woo Dauntless, but has to pass the Queen’s impossible tests in order to win his hand. The musical, which launched Carol Burnett’s comic career and had a long and successful Broadway run, has a cast of Souhegan veterans.
Hannah Emery (Jester), Matt Campbell (Sir Harry), Ally Hull (Lady Larkin), Liam Conway (The Wizard) and Ben Gottwald (The Minstrel) are part of the cast. The crew is led by Bailey Farris and Olivia Edvalson. Pat McMullen co-directs, along with Steve Hodgman, while Souhegan alumni, Jay von Handorf, choreographs, Stan St. Onge does technical direction, Carl Benevides directs the orchestra and Mickey Kats designs the costumes.
See the Souhegan website at www.sau39.org/Domain/8 for information on reserving tickets. Adults are $15 and students and senior citizens, $10.
