Amherst looking for new playground site

AMHERST – Playground equipment at Cemetery Fields in Amherst has to be moved and as of last week, the choice was down to one potential site.

Selectman Tom Grella told his colleagues April 28 that volunteer Wendy Rannenberg and a Recreation Department foreman looked at two properties and found them unsuitable – an area on Boston Post Road across from Wilkins School and the area behind the Middle Street skating pond.

The area across from Wilkins has a large traffic volume and poor line of sight, and the Middle Street site is too small.

Now, Grella said a third location will be considered – Upper Wilkins Field. “It will cost money to prove the town’s ownership,” he said.

Cemetery trustees said recreation equipment, including the Sarah Jeanne Roy Memorial Playground, must be removed from Cemetery Fields by Sept. 1. The playground is the only one in town not on school property.
