Wilton’s iconic traffic ‘dummy’ is back

WILTON – The “Dummy,” the town’s popular silent policeman, was returned on Monday to his spot at the junction of Main Street and Forest Road, and his job of directing traffic to keep right and giving directions along Route 31.

The traffic light/sign post/directional marker was carefully removed several weeks ago by the Department of Public Works, taken apart, and the sheet metal components treated for rust prevention. It was then repainted bright white and relettered. The hands pointing to Peterborough and Lyndeborough have been restored.

The Dummy dates to around 1920.
