Ocean State Job Lot to go into Milford Stop & Shop space

MILFORD – Discount retailer Ocean State Job Lot plans to move into the old Stop & Shop supermarket building on Nashua Street.

According to the town planning department, the store will subdivide the existing building into three commercial spaces and hopes to open this winter.

Ocean State Job Lot sells kitchen pantry staples, household goods, clothing, pet supplies and seasonal products, including holiday items, sporting goods and gardening items with a reputation for deep discounts.

The retailer has 116 stores in New England, New York and New Jersey and bills itself as New England’s “Home of Adventure Shopping,” with “quality brand name merchandise at closeout prices.”

Other New Hampshire stores are in Concord, Derry, Hooksett, Newport, Ossipee, Peterborough, Portsmouth, Walpole and Woodsville.

Ocean State opened for business in 1977 as a single store in North Kingstown, R.I. and with the intention of selling brand name, first-quality products at closeout prices by finding manufacturers’ overruns, overstocks and packaging changes, according to the company’s website.

The Stop & Shop grocery chain, which opened the Milford supermarket about 10 years ago across from Shaw’s supermarket, closed all its New Hampshire stores in summer 2013 as part of a retrenchment. The Nashua Street space has been empty since then.

Bill Parker, Milford’s community development director, said plans won’t have to go before the planning or zoning boards
because it is a retail use in a retail space and the only thing they will need for the town is a tenant-change permit and building plans for the renovations.

In the former Stop & Shop space in Hudson, Goodwill is scheduled to open a retail store and distribution center after the 40,000-square-foot grocery store shut at the end of 2013.

Stop & Shop has begun expanding again in Massachusetts by opening relatively small stores of 20,000 square feet or less, backing away from the large superstore model it used in Hudson and Milford.
