Hockey iced out

MILFORD – Hockey is a winter sport, but this year there has been too much winter. The grand opening of Milford’s hockey rink, planned for Feb. 13, had to be postponed until Feb. 20 because deep snow is acting as an insulator and melting ice underneath.

Plus, said Recreation Programs Coordinator Stephanie Zubricki, there is more snow coming.

“So it’s a mix,” she said in an email, “not freezing due to insulation and having trouble clearing it due to the ice not being frozen and having so much snow.”

The rink is adjacent to the older one at Shepard Park on Nashua Street, and the grand opening, from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20, will include fire pits, s’mores, and refreshments.

The 36-inch pipeline would mainly follow the power line and would go through Mason, Brookline, Milford and Amherst.
