Kayakers take to the Souhegan River

WILTON – On Sunday morning, April 12, 13 experienced boaters took their kayaks and canoes down a stretch of the Souhegan River on the first trip of the season sponsored by the Merrimack River Paddlers and the Souhegan Watershed Association. The stretch from the bridge on Route 31 South to near Monadnock water is rated Class 2 and has many small rapids, rocks to avoid, and some down trees to negotiate. Several of the kayakers called it a “good warmup for the season.” They called the bright sunshine almost perfect weather.

The river is running high and ice still lines the river in shady spots. The water temperature was estimated at about 34 degrees and protection was required.

The boaters came from across the state and northern Massachusetts.
