Superhero Day at Rideout Elementary

WILTON – Every person has some special skill or talent, and the new Odyssey Enrichment Program at Florence Rideout Elementary School is designed to help each student discover and develop that talent.

Principal Tim O’Connell, disguised as the superhero "Captain O" – who looked a lot like Captain America – led the opening assembly in the school gym on Oct. 23.

To focus on each person’s interests, a selection of "everyday heroes" was invited to speak to the students about their professions. Each local hero was provided with a cape.

Among the speakers were the police chiefs of Wilton and Lyndeborough, Wilton Fire Capt. Joe Torre, librarian Pat Fickett, school nurse Diana Zoltko, high school Principal Brian Bagley, and representatives of the school’s PTO and Boys & Girls Club of Milford, which many students attend after school.

Each speaker was asked to discuss his or her profession, what skills are needed and any difficulties overcome. Students were asked why each occupation was important to the community.
