Firefighter honored at town tree lighting
LYNDEBOROUGH – The new Christmas tree on the Village Common was lighted for the first time on Sunday, with the lights dedicated to Derek Lankowski, the fireman killed last March in a freak accident.
The lights were turned on by his widow, Melissa Lankowski, after the arrival of Santa Claus by fire truck.
Derek Lankowski, a member of the Fire Department for about eight years, died when high winds broke a tree that fell onto his pickup truck.
After the ceremonial lighting, Santa met with children for pictures, and then everyone walked up the hill to Citizens’ Hall for refreshments and gifts.
The annual event is sponsored by the Lyndeborough Fire Department and Fire Department Auxiliary.
