MILFORD – New Hampshire Antique Co-op will present Art: Salon-style, a new art exhibit featuring original and affordable paintings from the 1800s to the present, hung in the style of traditional 19th century French salon exhibitions. The exhibit will open the weekend of New Hampshire Antique Co-op’s Annual Holiday Open House, Nov. 24-27. Art: Salon-style spotlights more than 50 oil paintings and watercolors with affordable prices ranging from $30 to $995. The works cover an array of categories from still life to landscape, Impressionist to Hudson River School and Abstract to Realist. The broad range of artists represented in this exhibit and sale features sketches from Leon Kroll and Lucy Hariot Booth, a large Impressionist beach scene by Stefanos Sideris, still life works by Frederick Rhodes Sisson, and a variety of works by notable local area artists such as David Dodge, Christopher Myott, Peter Sandback, Steve Previte and Daryl Johnson.

Salon art exhibits began in France in the 17th century and featured works by leading artists of the time. The paintings in these salon exhibitions were hung from floor to ceiling in the gallery. Between 1748 and 1890, the Salon de Paris was considered the greatest annual art event in the Western world. Sponsored by the Academie Royale and Ecole des Beaux Arts, the Salon de Paris was open to all artists to apply. Later in the 19th century, other competing organizations created their own exhibitions that were also called salons. All would feature a variety of works hung to fill the gallery walls from high to low.
