Peacock Players to present ‘Hairspray’
NASHUA – Peacock Players & Company, New Hampshire’s premiere award-winning community theatre, will proudly present the Broadway smash musical Hairspray for two weekends in May at the Janice B. Streeter Theatre, located, 14 Court St., Nashua.
You can’t stop the beat with this big and bold musical about one girl’s inspiring dream to dance. The 1950’s are out and change is in the air! Hairspray, winner of eight Tony Awards – including Best Musical – is a family-friendly musical, piled bouffant-high with laughter, romance, and deliriously tuneful songs.
It’s 1962 in Baltimore, and the lovable plus-size teen Tracy Turnblad has only one desire – to dance on the popular “Corny Collins Show.” When her dream comes true, Tracy is transformed from social outcast to sudden star.
She must use her newfound power to dethrone the reigning Teen Queen, win the affections of heartthrob Link Larkin, and integrate a television network – all without denting her ‘do.
Peacock Players & Company is proud to be celebrated as New Hampshire’s premiere award-winning community theatre. Earlier this year, Peacock Players was the recent recipient of six New Hampshire Theatre Awards and ten additional Top Three Finalist honors at the 2018 New Hampshire Theatre Award ceremony, held at the Capitol Center for the Arts in Concord. Peacock Players is proud to carry the distinction of having received more industry awards and honors than any other professional, community, or youth theatre in the state.
Hairspray will be directed by Artistic Director and Broadway veteran performer, Keith Weirich. Musical Director Henry Kopczynskie III and Choreographer Cristina White will also lend their talents to the production. Weirich will also design the scenic elements and lighting for the production with the help of longtime colleague Norm St. Germain, with Rich Loomer designing sound and Alex Homola designing costumes for the much-anticipated production. The multi award-winning production team has received New Hampshire Theatre Awards for their individual and collective work for the past three consecutive years.
“As I dove into working on this production,” says Weirich, “I was entranced by the musical’s ability to not accept the world as it was, but to break down barriers and believe in a better world. Hairspray is an entertaining and clever story – it not only allows us an opportunity to enjoy the nostalgia of the 60’s through its unique pastiche of music and toe-tapping dance, but it also empowers the belief that people are individuals and that those individuals can bring about equality, harmony, and hope.”
The cast of Hairspray will be led by Amherst teen Evmorfia Alton as Amber Von Tussle. The adult cast includes Amherst resident Bob Frasca as Harriman Spritzer. The rest of the ensemble is rounded out with New Hampshire’s most recognized and awarded young theatre performers.
This Peacock Players & Company Mainstage production will be sponsored in part by Mint Printworks Screen Print and Design, Creative Costuming and The Telegraph.
Please note that Hairspray is rated PG. Parental Guidance is suggested.
