Case of fired Brookline police sergeant to begin soon

BROOKLINE – Fired police Sgt. Michael Kurland’s pretrial conference has been scheduled for Jan. 3 at 9 a.m., at Hillsborough County Superior Court, Southern District, according to court records. Kurland’s challenge asserts that he was fired because the police chief, William Quigley III, harbored a grudge against him.

Kurland said the bad blood stemmed from an incident he responded to that involved one of Quigley’s sons.

After town officials fired former Police Chief Thomas Goulden last year, Kurland served as interim police chief. He was one of a number of candidates who applied for the chief’s job.

Kurland’s trial is scheduled to begin the week of Jan. 9 or Jan. 17, depending how quickly the court disposes of criminal cases and a jury trial currently on the docket, a court clerk said. A civil and equity matter, Kurland’s case is to be decided by a judge.
