Trio of events slated at Brookline library

The Brookline Public Library invites you to join us for three wonderful events this month.

Starting March 10, the Library will celebrate Youth Art Month with an exhibit in the children’s room featuring the works of some talented student’s art works from the CSDA. The works exhibited will be a selection of pottery, sculpture, painting and drawing.

“The Hunger Games,” the first installment of author Suzanne Collins’s popular trilogy, will premiere in movie theaters March 23. In anticipation of the film, the Brookline Public Library is sponsoring a “Hunger Games” book discussion at 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 13.

All teens and tweens who have read the book are invited to register for the event, which will showcase the movie’s trailers and include discussion of the story. Refreshments will include baked goods, a nod to one of the story’s characters.

Both the book and the movie chronicle the story of Katniss Everdeen, a 16-year-old citizen of District 12 in the country of Panem, which is governed by the Capitol and President Coriolanus Snow.

As punishment for a previous uprising by citizens of the now destroyed District 13, every year the Capitol holds a lottery to choose one boy and one girl from the 12 districts to compete in the “Hunger Games.” A fight to the death in an outdoor arena of the Capitol’s design, the winner being the one contestant left alive. When her little sister Prim is selected as the female “tribute” from District 12, Katniss volunteers to compete in her place.

Tense, brutal and enthralling, the book addresses philosophical concerns regarding the exploitation of the poor for the diversion of the ruling class, and serves as a commentary on today’s constant flow of image and information.

The breakneck pace, breath-taking action and indelible characters makes it almost impossible to put down until the end, when the winner of the “Hunger Games” is revealed.

Registration is limited. Please register in the Children’s Room of the Brookline Public Library.

On Thursday, March 29, from 6:30-8 p.m., the library will host the program “Preserving Memories: Maintaining Family Photos, Personal Papers, and Memorabilia,” by Melissa Mannon.

Every day, families lose their valued items to neglect, mishandling and misplacement. Your attentive care can ensure their security.

This one-and-a-half hour presentation is designed to help individuals care for their family photos, personal papers, and memorabilia. Learn the basics about avoiding harmful factors that can harm or destroy your materials and explore the best ways to ensure that your family history is documented and maintained for future generations. Melissa will discuss options for duplication, digitization and conservation of cherished family items.

Attendees are invited to bring personal papers and photos for which they need help caring. The presentation takes on an “Antiques Roadshow” atmosphere with people sharing stories about treasured items.

Dory Lewis is assistant director of the Brookline Public Library and can be contacted at the library at 673-3330.
