Hollis Upper Elementarty School collects pajamas, books for needy children

HOLLIS – Hollis Upper Elementary School recently held a successful pajama drive in conjunction with Scholastic Book Club.

According to Brenda Nickerson, media specialist, the student council set a goal to give back to the community and chose this campaign because for each pair of new pajamas collected, Scholastic would donate a book.

Within a few days of sending out an eblast announcing the drive, 178 pairs of pajamas were collected, well above the initial goal. To celebrate, the staff and students wore their pajamas to school the final day of the drive.

“These are going to children in group homes, shelters and temporary housing facilities,” said Nickerson. “These are the kids who are abused or abandoned, living in poverty with no one tucking them in at night. I want to send a huge thank you to the community, parents and students for coming together so quickly.”

According to the Scholastic Book website, they have donated more than a million pairs of pajamas and books to children nationwide since the Delivering Warm Sleepwear and Nurturing Books program started in 2001.
