Merrimack’s Home Health & Hospice Care looking for volunteers

Home Health & Hospice Care is looking for people interested in volunteering their time to work in our hospice program with home and nursing home hospice clients who live in southern New Hampshire and surrounding communities.

Volunteer support helps patients and their families feel less alone during a difficult time. In just a few hours a week, a volunteer can make a friendly visit, assist with light housework or shopping and errands or provide respite so that family members can take a break. Volunteers may also become involved in a specialty program, such as veterans supporting veterans at end of life, sitting vigil with people at very end of life or our complimentary therapy programs: pet visitation, music and Reiki.

A 33-hour Hospice Training program will begin on Thursday, Feb. 20, from 9 a.m. until noon, and continue to meet weekly through May 1. The sessions will be held at Home Health & Hospice Care’s office at 7 Executive Park Drive, Merrimack. Since Hospice volunteer Training is HHHC’s most popular public education program and an interview is required, individuals are encouraged to register as soon as possible.

The training sessions are informative and cover a variety of topics, including hospice philosophy, listening skills, pain and symptom management, spiritual and emotional issues, and grief and bereavement care. The training is free for volunteers. Individuals interested in taking hospice training for personal or professional reasons may attend for a $150 fee.

An alternate evening training series is offered in the fall. Additional information about hospice training and the volunteer application can be found online at www.hhhc.org/volunteer. Interested individuals may email volunteer@hhhc.org or call the volunteer manager at 557-2806 to schedule an interview.
