Re-enactor to present program on Hollis Militia Company
HOLLIS – The Hollis Historical Society will present “Reuben Dow’s Company” by Jim Hayden at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, at the Lawrence Barn on Depot Road.
Dow’s Company began as the Hollis Militia Company. Hayden will come in uniform with appropriate gear and will also have a re-creation of one of the bounty coats that the townspeople of Hollis made for the soldiers in fall 1775.
Hayden’s program will include an overall history of the militia system as a “royal” organization and mandate, and go on to discuss the changeover to a “patriot” organization.
He will also speak about the Lexington Alarm, Nevins Stone, the march to Cambridge, Bunker Hill and aftermath, and finally the company going into the Continental Army with the 17 Massachusetts Regiment under Col. Prescott.
Hayden is a Revolutionary War re-enactor who will be equipped in the manner of the Hollis Militia of 1775.
Refreshments will be served. Admission is free.
