Students inducted into honor societies at NDA in Tyngsborough
TYNGSBOROUGH, Mass. – The Academy of Notre Dame inducted 17 girls into three honor societies during a recent ceremony in Our Lady’s Chapel.
Induction ceremonies were held for the National Honor Society, the Societe Honoraire Francaise and the Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica – respectively, the French and Spanish honor societies.
The ceremony included prayer, personal reflections spoken in English and fluent French and Spanish, and the presentation of certificates and/or pins to new members of each honor society.
“The ceremony inducting students into the National Honor Society, La Societe Honoraire Francaise and La Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica is always one of my favorite nights,” Principal Helen Kay said. “It is wonderful to celebrate the scholarship, work ethic and service of our young women. They deserve a big round of applause for reaching this milestone.”
The National Honor Society is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, the NHS serves to honor students who have demonstrated excellence in scholarship, leadership, service and character.
One of the requirements for the National Honor Society is for the students to perform 7.5 hours of community service each month. The academy students fulfill this through volunteering at area soup kitchens, churches, hospitals, nursing homes, the MSPCA and Ironstone Farm, a therapeutic horseback riding center; by reading to the blind; and by tutoring high school and middle school students.
La Societe Honoraire de Francais is an academic honor society established by the American Association of Teachers of French designed to honor the academic achievement of French language scholars and promote the study of the Francophone culture.
The Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica is an honor society for high school students enrolled in Spanish and/or Portuguese, sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. The society recognizes high achievement of high school students in the Spanish and Portuguese languages and promotes a continuing interest in Hispanic and Portuguese studies.
