Hollis student plays Maria in ‘West Side Story’
MANCHESTER – Kat Bolling, of Hollis, is playing the role of Maria in the Majestic Theatre’s production of "West Side Story" at Manchester Community Music School’s Holy Cross Hall, 2291 Elm St.
From the first notes to the final breath, "West Side Story" is one of the most memorable musicals and greatest love stories of all time. Arthur Laurents’ book remains as powerful, poignant and timely as ever.
The score by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim is widely regarded as one of the best ever written.
Shakespeare’s "Romeo and Juliet" is transported to modern-day New York City as two young, idealistic lovers find themselves caught between warring street gangs – the "American" Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks. Their struggle to survive in a world of hate, violence and prejudice is one of the most innovative, heart-wrenching and relevant musical dramas of our time.
Majestic’s production stars an ensemble cast under the direction of Rebecca Antonakos, assisted by A. Robert Dionne, with musical direction by Judy Hayward and choreography by Jen Sassak. The sponsor is the Frederick Smyth Institute of Music.
Bolling is a graduate of Hollis Brookline High School and a senior at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, where she majors in computer science.
She also studies voice at the Peabody Institute of Music in Baltimore.
