Book signing to benefit Humane Society for Greater Nashua
Sy Montgomery, of Hancock, who so heartwarmingly recounted the long and adventurous life of the family pig Christopher Hogwood in "The Good, Good Pig," has followed up with an equally compelling tale from the animal kingdom but far from her old New England barn.
Mongomery will hold a book signing and presentation of "The Soul of an Octopus, a Surprising Exploration into the Wonder of Consciousness," at 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 7, at Albee Phillips Kitchen & Bath, 83 W. Pearl St., Nashua.
Recently named a National Book Award finalist, all proceeds from sales of "The Soul of an Octopus" and "The Good, Good Pig" through Toadstool Bookshop in Milford will benefit the Nashua Humane Society for Greater Nashua.
Albee Phillips Kitchen & Bath will offer complimentary gift wrapping for the occasion. Seating is limited.
"We’re pleased to be the beneficiary of this holiday event and appreciate that it is with an author who is an advocate for all animals," said Doug Barry, president and CEO of the Humane Society for Greater Nashua. "We take in and care for over 2,000 pets every year, and community fundraisers like this help us provide medical care, food and shelter for these animals in need."
In the book, Montgomery explores the emotional and physical world of the octopus – and the remarkable connections this astonishingly complex, spirited creature makes with humans. She shares the growing appreciation of the octopus, and also tells a love story. By turns funny, entertaining, touching and profound, "The Soul of an Octopus" reveals what octopuses can teach us about the meeting of two very different minds.
"I designed our showroom to bring the community together, and hosting Sy Montgomery to benefit the Greater Nashua Humane Society is exactly how I envisioned the space being used in the ‘off’ hours," said Kathy Albee Phillips, co-owner of Albee Phillips Kitchen & Bath. "I’m really looking forward to meeting her."
Montgomery, a naturalist, documentary scriptwriter and author of 20 books of nonfiction for adults and children, has been the recipient of numerous honors, including lifetime achievement awards from the Humane Society and the New England Booksellers Association.
