Hollis plastic surgeon presented key to city of Nashua

NASHUA – Mark B. Constantian, MD, FACS, received the city key from Mayor Donnlalee Lozeau at a surprise ceremony at City Hall on Dec. 18.

The citation recognized Constantian, of Hollis, "for his leadership and numerous honors; thank you for bringing worldwide recognition to our city." The key was only the 12th presented by Lozeau since her election in 2007.

Constantian has practiced in Nashua since 1987, when he was only the second private practice plastic surgeon in New Hampshire. Although his practice was originally broad and covered the full spectrum of plastic surgery, Constantian developed a subspecialty interest in cosmetic and reconstructive nasal surgery that soon became national and then international following his journal publications and textbooks (the latest on the link between childhood abuse and body image), and his numerous presentations at national and international plastic surgery meetings.

At this point, only one-third of Constantian’s patients come from Greater Nashua; another third come from the rest of the Northeast, and the final third comes from the rest of the country or overseas. He has treated patients from some 30 countries during his career.

"Because patients expected a surgical subspecialist to be located in a metropolitan area or at a big medical center, we got frequent inquiries about where Nashua was and why I practiced here instead of Park Avenue," Constantian said. "I told them that I practiced here because I loved the city and wanted to raise my family here.

"We even put a link on our website to the city of Nashua website, and most visiting patients have been very well impressed by the city – not only its appearance and semirural environment, but its safety.

"I am overwhelmed by this honor, and very happy that my staff and I have been able to be ambassadors for Nashua. For me, this key more properly memorializes what Nashua has done for me than vice versa."

Constantian maintains his private practice at 19 Tyler St. He is past president of the New England Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, the Northeastern Society of Plastic Surgeons and The Rhinoplasty Society, an international educational group. He is the author of more than 70 published papers and 33 textbook chapters, and was the recipient of the Clinician of the Year award from the American Association of Plastic Surgeons in 2015.
