Merrimack to hold registration for kindergarten, first grade

MERRIMACK – Superintendent of Schools Marjorie C. Chiafery announced registration information for all Merrimack children entering public school kindergarten and first grade in the 2015-16 school year.

The process will begin with parents picking up registration packets at their neighborhood school between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday-Friday, Jan. 5-9.

Registration materials for kindergarten and first-grade students will be returned to the school between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22. Parents should bring completed registration forms and their child’s original birth certificate with a raised seal. A copy of the birth certificate will be made for the record and the original returned.

Parents must also present their child’s immunization record. They will be notified at this time whether their child needs further immunizations.

To be eligible for kindergarten registration, a child must be 5 by Sept. 30, 2015.

To be eligible for first-grade registration, a child must be 6 by Sept. 30, 2015.

All students registering for public school for the first time are required by state law to have a physical examination by a licensed physician. This exam must take place within one year prior to the first day of school.

The child is also required to be immunized before entering school for measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus, oral and/or injected polio, varicella and hepatitis B. The month, day and year are required for all immunizations.

For any changes on fall requirements, visit www.education.nh.gov/instruction/school_health/faq_immunizations.htm.

No child will be allowed to enter school in the fall unless she or he has met all the above requirements. Parents are urged to complete the physical examination and immunizations as soon as possible, as area doctors often have difficulty scheduling appointments late in the summer.

The child’s medical record should be completed and returned to school by Aug. 3.

The Nashua Public Health Department has immunization clinics for young children every week. Immunizations are available for a small fee. The center is at 18 Mulberry St., Nashua.
