Merrimack seeks new holder of Boston Post Cane
MERRIMACK – On Sept. 17, Madeline Bennett, holder of the Boston Post Cane since 2011, died at age 100.
The town of Merrimack has begun the search for the oldest resident to become the new Boston Post Cane holder.
The Boston Post Cane tradition started in 1909 when the Boston Post newspaper delivered the gold-headed ebony canes to 700 towns in New England and requested they be presented to the oldest resident in town and passed on to the next oldest when he or she died.
To qualify, one must be a current resident who has resided in Merrimack for at least 25 years.
If you qualify or know someone who does, send a nomination form to Town of Merrimack, ATTN: Boston Post Cane, 6 Baboosic Lake Road, Merrimack, NH 03054.
Nomination forms are available at www.merrimack
nh.gov/bostonpostcane and at Town Hall. For more information, call 424-2331 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
