Give him a ‘hive five’: Merrimack man completes Bee School

MERRIMACK – Dick Bean, of Merrimack, recently graduated from Bee School 2015, a six-session event hosted annually by the nonprofit Merrimack Valley Beekeepers Association.

The association is one of seven statewide groups composed of novice and professional beekeepers.

Bean, who intends to introduce more honeybees to his garden, noted the value of the bees as pollinators for flowers, fruits and vegetables.

Bean attended Bee School with his wife, JoAnn Rotast, and some 100 more students seeking to learn about the ancient science of beekeeping.

Allen Lindahl, owner of Hillside Apiaries in Merrimack, served as one of nearly a dozen expert instructors who taught the classes, gatherings that featured exhibits, videos and a wealth of printed materials, along with a raffle at the final assembly.

The Bee School began March 3 with classes held on six consecutive Tuesday evenings at St. James United Methodist Church, 646 Daniel Webster Highway.
