FLASH FICTION CONTEST

This September, in honor of the American Library Association’s spokesdog, Snoopy, we’re hosting a Flash Fiction Contest for kids ages 8 and older, teens and adults. "Flash Fiction" is a short fictional work that contains a few hundred words or fewer. Interested writers should submit a story that is 500 words or fewer that begins with Snoopy’s famous prompt "It was a dark and stormy night." Visit the library’s website for full contest rules. Deadline is Sept. 30.

CRIBBAGE, ANYONE?

If you’d like to play or learn to play cribbage, drop in from 2-3 p.m. Mondays. This friendly group meets weekly in the Lowell Room upstairs.

ONGOING ADULT PROGRAMS

The Merrimack Public Library offers Knit, Stitch or Crochet from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursdays; drop-in tech help (make an appointment with a librarian); a monthly book discussion group that meets at 7 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month; a French Conversation Group that meets 1-2 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of the month; a music catalog; an online newsstand; and Kindle library books. DUNGEONS & DRAGONS GAMING NIGHT

The Merrimack Public library and Merrymac Games & Comics bring you a Dungeons & Dragons gaming night from 7-8:30 p.m. every Wednesday. Join other gamers for a fun-filled evening. No registration required.

Children’s programming

PAWS TO READ WITH RUBY

Children ages 4 and older, as well as teens, adults and everyone in between, who would like to practice their reading skills can read to Ruby, a certified therapy dog. We will have reading materials available, but you are welcome to bring your favorite choice. Need to practice reading aloud in a foreign language? That’s fine, too. To reserve a 20-minute time slot, register online or call 424-5021. Use an adult Merrimack Library card to register.

PRESCHOOL STORYTIME

A 45-minute school-readiness class with a weekly theme for preschoolers ages 3 and older will include reading picture books, making crafts or playing simple games. These activities are designed to teach children listening comprehension skills, letter and shape recognition, and new vocabulary words, as well as improve gross and fine motor skills and introduce helpful social skills. This session runs from 10:15-11 a.m. Mondays through Nov. 24 and is open to Merrimack Library cardholders. No registration is required.

ONGOING CHILDREN’S AND TEEN’S PROGRAMS

A Comics Club Book Group for grades 5-10 meets at 6:30 p.m. on the second Wednesday of the month; Advanced Beginners Book Group, for ages 6-8 with an adult, meets 6:30-7:30 p.m. on the second Monday of the month; the Junior Book Club, for ages 7 and older, meets 6:30-7:30 p.m. on the third Monday of the month.

WITCHES, POP CULTURE AND THE PAST’

The Bedford Public Library will host Dr. Robin DeRosa from Plymouth State University for the presentation "Witches, Pop Culture, and the Past" at 7 p.m. Oct. 8. Free. Registration required.

ACCESS TO FREE MOVIES, MUSIC

The Bedford Public Library has public availability to thousands of movies, shows, music albums and audiobooks, available for mobile and online access.

THURSDAY THEATER IN THE LIBRARY

Come to the Bedford Public Library on the second Thursday of the month to watch a recent movie on the big screen. There are showings at 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Popcorn provided. Free. Registration required. Children younger than 13 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

SCRABBLE, ANYONE?

Join other word game enthusiasts at 7 p.m. on the second Wednesday of the month.
