Carl Robert Farnham

Carl Robert Farnham, 80, passed away peacefully on November 20, 2010, at his home, with his family by his side. He was born on November 2, 1930 to the late Robert H. & Mabel Beckwith Farnham of Tunbridge, Vermont. He leaves a sister, Helen Crawford; his sister Dorothy Allison predeceased him.

Carl was immensely proud to be a native of Tunbridge, VT, the small village where he was born and raised. In fact, he would occasionally stroll through the Village Cemetery with visitors, friends, and younger relatives, proudly pointing out all the generations of his family buried there, including the town’s founders, dating back as far as the 1700s.

He married Cora Sally Battey, of Chelsea, Vermont, on June 28th, 1952 and much of his life revolved around making her and their children happy. With Sally’s help, he recently documented many life experiences and stories told to him by his father, in a book they entitled Remember When. In every story was a subtly hidden life lesson, left for the reader to consider. His unparalleled common sense and generous spirit left many feeling fortunate for their time with him. He encouraged his children, grandchildren, and others, to think for themselves, even when their thinking was contrary to his own.

Especially known for his strong work ethic, one of his last wishes was simply to spend an evening fishing in a small brook or riding through the hills of Tunbridge, “remembering when.” Spoken not with regret for opportunities lost, but more as a reminder to the rest of us to appreciate the moments we have now.

All are welcome to join the family at a brief graveside memorial to be held at the Village Cemetery in Tunbridge on Sunday, December 5th , 2010 at 1 o’clock. Please join the family in fellowship and share your stories and memories of Carl after the service in the Parish House next to the cemetery.

Surviving family members include his wife Sally, his daughters, Debbie Landry, Diane Farnham, Donna Farnham, and his son Robert Carl Farnham. His grandchildren, Gretchen Smith, Karl Rockwell, Erica Leighton, Elizabeth W. Taylor, Samuel Allen Farnham, Jacob Charles Farnham, and his great-grandchildren, Brittany Smith, Brooke Smith, Davis Leighton, Nathan Leighton, and Hayden Rockwell.

Carl’s generosity was evident in all he did for others, and in the way he lived his life. Please consider sending a generous donation to the Tunbridge Community Food Shelf, c/o Euclid Farnham, 24 The Cross Road, Tunbridge, VT 05077 in memory of Carl.

He is deeply missed.

The family would especially like to thank Boardway and Cilley Funeral Home for respectfully and professionally handling the arrangements.
