Paul E. Chabot
Paul E. Chabot, of Wilton, NH, died at the age of 97 on September 4th, 2014 at Pheasant Wood Nursing Home, Peterborough, NH.
Born April 22, 1917 in Manchester, NH, Paul was a lifetime resident of New Hampshire except for the few years he served as a Brother in a Catholic Seminary in Canada.
In October of 1944 he married his soul mate, Simone B. Miville, also of Manchester, a union that lasted more than 66 years until Simone’s death in 2011. They had 10 children, 9 who survive and Matthew who died in 1961. Paul is predeceased by 5 of his siblings and survived by one sister, Cecile Wester, of Concord, NH; and one brother, Louis Chabot of Manchester, NH.
Paul was at home on the farm, and was recently featured in the Monadnock Ledger Transcript detailing some of his farming experiences. Raising a family as a farmhand was financially difficult, though, and Paul worked several years for Samuel Abbott in the Hillsboro Mills Woolen Textile where his job was washing wool, supplemented at night by moonlighting as a master wall paper hanger and painter. On weekends he remained true to his roots gardening, raising rabbits, racing pigeons and teaching his children where and how to gather butternuts, hazelnuts and blueberries.
In the early 1970s, with the closure of the mill, he was hired by the Morrison
family/Upland Farms to run a cider mill in Amherst, NH. He soon became the
gardener/caretaker of Upland Farm Estates for the next 30 years. As an Eagle Scout, Paul was proud to work for and alongside John Morison, a fellow Eagle Scout. Paul also extensively researched his family roots and claims of Charlemagne descendancy remain in dispute.
Paul and Simone’s living children are: Pauline Chabot of Sanbornton, NH with her spouse, Gail Morrison; Maryel Chabot of Peterborough, NH; Bernard Chabot of Cambridge, VT; Aurore Chabot of Tucson, AZ; Dr. Francis Chabot of Utica, NY with his wife Theresa; Agnes Almquist of Winthrop, WA with her husband John; Pierre Chabot of Hancock, NH with his wife Debbie; Victoria Soodak of Greenfield, NH and her husband William and Christopher Chabot also of Greenfield, NH, Paul and Simone’s lifelong companion. There are 16 grandchildren and nearly 18 great-
