Rodney S. Hansen Jr.

Rodney S. Hansen, Jr., of Amherst, passed away Tuesday, March 15, 2016, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Nashua after a long, courageous battle with cancer. He was 70 years old.

Rodney was born January 11, 1946, in Olympia, Wash., and was son of the late Rodney S. and Janet (O’Leary) Hansen. He graduated from Olympia High School in 1964. Rodney then served with the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War as a Chinese linguist. While stationed in San Angelo, Texas, he met his wife and best friend of 49 years, Sharon E. (Martin) Hansen. The two were married on June 30, 1967, and were relocated to Taiwan, where they were stationed for the next year and a half.

Upon Rodney’s return to the states, he attended Oregon State University where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Food Science and Technology as well as a Master’s in Business Administration. While attending Oregon State, Rodney and Sharon’s daughter Shealu and son Rodney III were born. Rodney had a long career in the brewing industry, beginning working side by side with his father at the Olympia Brewing Company in Olympia, Washington. He ended his career as the plant manager at the Anheuser Busch plant in Merrimack, NH, in January 2001.

Rodney loved so many things in his life. Whether it was developing and supporting his staff throughout his career or enjoying his family, cars, boat, or motorcycle, he exuded positive energy. He was also an avid swimmer and tennis player who loved fishing at the lake and being a member of the Viper Club. In addition, he was a devoted board member of the United Way of Greater Nashua. Above all, Rodney loved and took great pride in his wife, children, and grandchildren. He thoroughly enjoyed watching his grandchildren participate in sports, rarely missing practices and always present at games.

Rodney is survived by his wife, Sharon; his daughter and son-in-law, Shealu and Kevin Bishop of Weare, NH; his son, Rodney S. Hansen, III of Barre, Vt.; three grandchildren, Blaine, Cameron and Cali Bishop; a sister and four brothers, Marion Nelson, Chris, Jan and Tom Hansen of Washington, and Eric Hansen of Oregon, as well as nieces, nephews, and cousins.
