Fosdick J. ‘Smitty’ Smith

Fosdick Jarvis "Smitty" Smith, 96, passed away peacefully at his home at Ledgewood Bay at Milford on May 19, 2016.

Born in Jamaica, NY, on December 19, 1919, he lived his young­er years on Long Island, NY, before moving to Am­herst, New Hamp­shire, in 1937.

He was pre­deceased by his wife of 70 years, Grace M. (Harding) Smith, in 2013.

Smitty graduated 3rd in his class of 21 as Midship­man from Kings Point Academy, Kings Point, NY in 1944 and served in the United States Merchant Marines dur­ing WWII. After return­ing from the war, Smitty worked for many years as a Finishing Foreman at Waumbec Mills in Man­chester, NH; and later worked for Ryder Con­crete of Milford, NH and Quest Diagnostics in Mel­bourne, FL.

After many happy re­tirement years in Flor­ida, Smitty and Grace returned to New Hamp­shire in 2010 to be closer to family.

Smitty is survived by his sister, Caroline Tuttle of Quakertown, PA; his four children, Ronald H. Smith and his wife, Mar­garet of Micco, FL; Janet L. Caswell and her husband Timothy of Greenfield, NH; Kristen E. Smith of Wilton, NH, and Melanie Bock and her husband Clive of Vero Beach, FL; seven grandchil­dren and 12 great-grandchildren.

ARRANGEMENTS: There will be no calling hours. A private grave­side memorial service to commemorate the lives of Smitty and Grace will be held June 18, 2016 at Meadowview Cemetery in Amherst, NH.

In lieu of flowers, me­morial donations may be made to the Employee Fund at Ledgewood Bay at Milford, 43 Ledgewood Drive, Milford, NH 03055, the Amherst Library, 14 Main Steet, Amherst, NH 03031 or the Amherst Li­ons Club, P.O. Box 1105, Amherst, NH 03031. As­sisting the family with arrangements is the Pha­neuf Funeral Homes and Crematorium.
