Verne A. ‘Mooch’ Starkweather

Verne A. “Mooch” Starkweather, 65, died on June 21, 2017 at his home following a lengthy battle with cancer.

He was born on February 7, 1952 in Wilton, NH, the son of Marlene Leith. He attended school and graduated high school in Wilton, NH. In 1968, Verne joined the US Army and proudly served alongside his brothers in Vietnam until 1971. In 1986, he married the love of his life, Mary Jane Dougherty.

Mooch earned a living as a handyman for most of his life. He was extremely talented in refinishing furniture, gardening and general contract work.

He most enjoyed time spent with those that he loved, was a great cribbage player and enjoyed watching old shows such as the Three Stooges and John Wayne country western movies.

He is survived by his mother, Marlene Leith of Milford, NH, two brothers, Gary and Stan Martus, wife Mary Jane, two daughters, Michelle Starkweather and Shauna Brown, three step daughters and their spouses, Tracey Barber of Hartland, VT, Tammy Knowles of Lyndeborough, NH and Michelle Simek of Claremont, NH, many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and grandchildren.

A private service will be held and a Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society, The American Legion or Veterans of Foreign Wars.
