75 years ago, 1941

State Police Sgt. John Conti was called from Milford to aid another trooper in a cattle killing case. A Swiss Guernsey heifer owned by Arnold Ellsworth of Deering was slaughtered in the pasture. Police believed three Hillsboro coon hunters, who were later apprehended trying to dispose of the meat in Hillsboro, killed the animal.

The Rationing Board handed down new information, including that soldiers on a furlough for seven days or more were entitled to a sugar ration of a half pound per week. People who had not obtained their war ration books were advised to do so.

Miss Kathryn Moran of Milford became the new clerical assistant at the Milford Draft Board.

The State Theatre in Nashua was showing Mickey Rooney in “A Yank at Eton” plus “official motion pictures of the state championship football game – Nashua High vs. Manchester Central.”

55 years ago, 1962

The Milford Community Athletic Association announced plans for a regulation baseball field and a softball/Little League field at Keyes Memorial Field.

In an editorial, Editor Bill Rotch praised New Hampshire’s educational TV station, Channel 11, for its coverage of the September state primary.

New officers of the 4-Leaf Clover Club, the Mont Vernon 4-H Club, were Martha Greene, president; Gayl Frazier, secretary, and Karleen Randal, treasurer.

The Autorama Motor Inn on Route 101 West in Milford was taking Thanksgiving reservations for its steak house, featuring a $2.75 complete dinner. It also offered Businessmen’s Luncheons every day at 95 cents.

The Milford kindergarten class of Mrs. Hardy visited the Milford Home for Aged Women on Halloween, parading in their costumes and presenting each woman with an apple or an orange.

30 years ago, 1987

Milford selectmen were thinking about recommending that the Police Department relocate from Town Hall to the old motel building on Elm Street.

The Milford Area Business and Professional Women’s Club named Violette’s IGA supermarket of Milford its Business of the Year, honoring Ron and Betty Violette.

Democratic presidential hopeful Jesse Jackson attended a meeting at the home of Steve and Liz Morgan in Amherst, sponsored by the Democrats of Amherst.

The Rev. William Lutz became rector of Milford’s Church of Our Saviour.

20 years ago, 1997

Milford Budget Committee Chairman Kevin Taylor said his committee probably would back construction of a new elementary school, saying that Bales School was “in bad shape.” In an editorial, Cabinet Editor Michael Cleveland wrote that “A new school is absolutely necessary.”

The Milford Veterans of Foreign Wars post was preparing to dedicate a memorial honoring the nation’s Special Forces soldiers at its post home on Perkins Street. Post commander Bob Barnes expected veterans from throughout the region to attend the dedication.

The Rev. William Lutz, rector of Milford’s Church of Our Saviour, was coaching Milford’s eighth grade football team.

The Souhegan High School boys and girls soccer teams made it to the semifinals of the state tournament.

The Town Hall Theatre in Wilton was showing Rowan Atkinson in “Bean” and Richard Gere in “Red Corner.”
