William Hart Jr.
William Hart Jr. died Saturday May 16, 2015 at Wheelock Terrace in Hanover, New Hampshire. He was 90 and had been in declining health in recent years.
He was born on July 11, 1924 in Leominster, Massachusetts, the youngest of five children of William and Katherine (Lilley) Hart. He grew up in Leominster and his family spent summers at Long Beach in Rockport Massachusetts, which fostered a life-long love of the seashore.
He graduated from Leominster High School in 1942 and started at Dartmouth College. World War II interrupted his college career and he joined the Navy V12 training program at Dartmouth. He received his commission in 1945 and served as a Naval officer in the Pacific on the U.S.S. DuPage, an attack transport. After the war, he returned to Dartmouth and graduated in 1949 with a degree in mathematics. He married Ursula Anglim of Fitchburg, Massachusetts in 1949 and they lived in Lewistown, Pennsylvania, Port Chester, New York and Wyckoff, New Jersey over the next 20 years.
Bill worked as an industrial engineer for Cluett Peabody and A.O. Smith. In 1961 he joined Southwestern Engineering Company (SWECO) as a sales engineer. Because of his gregarious nature and love of people, he was a very successful salesman and manager, and became the Eastern Regional Manager.
After the death of his first wife in 1969, he married Mavis Perry Buchanan in 1971 and they settled in Merrimack, New Hampshire. He retired in 1989 and they moved to Coventry, Vermont where they spent many happy years in a house they built with a beautiful view of Lake Memphremagog. During his retirement Bill was active in the Newport, Vermont Rotary, the Northeast Kingdom Mental Health Service and the United Church of Newport.
Both wives and his four sisters predeceased him. He is survived by his four children; daughter Susan and husband Gregory Schwarz of Lebanon NH; daughter Sara and husband Robert Demers of Merrimack NH; son William Hart III of Manchester NH; and son Craig and wife Heather Hart of Weymouth, MA. Bill spent the last 6 years of his life at Wheelock Terrace and his family would like to thank the staff there for the excellent care they gave him. He maintained his friendly and engaging personality to the end of his life.
