Be a veteran’s secret Santa this Christmas: Just Naturals honors veterans in local nursing homes

Be a veteran’s Secret Santa this Christmas

To the Editor:

Are you looking for something special to do this holiday season?

As a way of saying thank you, become a Secret Santa for a veteran living in one of our local nursing homes. Just Naturals & Company, of Bedford, offers a wide range of locally made natural, chemical-free, award-winning products for home, bath and body. For the fourth year in a row, the shop, owned by Karen Girardo, has coordinated with local nursing homes to launch a Christmas drive that honors and celebrates veterans in our area.

Last year’s Secret Santa drive put smiles on the faces of many veterans! Karen applauds the various holiday programs that are being offered for active duty veterans who are currently serving overseas, and lends her support to these endeavors year-round. But she wants us to remember the most senior veterans in nursing homes, too, those who reside in our community all year long. “I have been a longtime supporter of veterans’ causes, and wanted to do something that would allow people in the area the opportunity to show support for the veterans who are currently living in nursing homes,” Karen said. “I have the highest regard for all the honorable servicemen and women who have put their lives on the line for our country’s freedom, and Christmas is but one of the times we should remember that many of our veterans are living ‘next door’ in local nursing homes.”

Here’s how you can help: starting on Veterans Day, Nov. 11 through Dec. 12, stop by Just Naturals – located at 176 S. River Road, between Macy’s and Target – and choose a Secret Santa veteran request/name tag from our decorated Christmas tree. This year, the items requested range from Red Sox items, cookies and candy, to music CDs, sweatpants and winter gloves. (Items range from $10 to $30).

Most of the veterans, including several 80- and 90-year-olds, have served in conflicts dating from WWII to the Gulf War. In addition to your generous gift, Just Naturals will enclose their own aromatherapy gift to each veteran as well.

Karen adds, “We are believers in the positive effects aromatherapy has on total well-being – our small way of saying thank you for the service our vets have given and the sacrifice they have made.”

Just Naturals has name tags for nearly 100 local, (mostly) senior veterans, with their personal wish lists. Thank you for your generous support in last year’s Secret Santa Veterans drive. With your continued support, we hope to top our offerings this Christmas.

With appreciation and gratitude,

Thank you, Bedford, for food donations

Letter to Editor:

The Scouts of Troop 414 would like to thank the citizens of Bedford for their generous donations of food items in support of Scouting for Food.

This year, the town of Bedford contributed more than 10,000 food items that were donated to various food banks throughout the state. It was a very successful drive.

The success of this drive wouldn’t have been possible without the contributions of many members of the community. First, we would like to thank the entire Bedford Scouting community.

The Scouts from Boy Scout Troop 5, Cub Scout Packs 5 and 114 and the Girls Scouts of Bedford all made major contributions. Thank you also to Contemporary Chrysler and Dodge for their generous donation of a cargo van to transport the food.

Finally, thank you to the Thomas family, Bedford Presbyterian Church and Metropolis Realty, who allowed the use of their property to post our signs.

The entire Bedford community should be proud of our effort. We made a difference.

Thank you.
