Bedford School District gets most bang for its buck

To the Editor:

I am running for School Board because I believe that education is the most important gift we can give to the next generation.

A good education will give our children a head start in life, keep our community economically vibrant, and our country strong in a competitive global economy.

Like many Bedford residents, my wife and I moved here 16 years ago because of the outstanding reputation of the school system. Now, with our oldest two having recently graduated Bedford High School and our youngest soon to follow, we continue to be impressed with the quality of our schools.

Over the years, I have learned that great schools don’t just happen. They are the result of great teachers, dedicated administrators and highly involved parents. We are so fortunate in Bedford to have all of three.

But high-quality education doesn’t mean you have to throw a lot of money at it. The town of Bedford knows this. We have a lower cost per pupil than most other districts in the state, and we have lower than average teacher salaries compared to the state. Yet, Bedford consistently remains one of the highest performing districts in New Hampshire.

I strongly believe in fiscal responsibility, and as a member of the School Board would dedicate myself to being a prudent steward of public funds. As a captain in the United States Public Health Service with 24 years of active duty, I have managed a unit with 200 staff and a multi-million dollar budget. I know my way around a spreadsheet, and I know how to return value to the taxpayer.

I also have extensive volunteer experience with Bedford schools, having served a two-year term on the Curriculum Committee and a two-year term on the Wellness Committee. I have been a Robotics mentor for BHS, a girls recreational league soccer coach, a Boy Scout leader, and a member of the board of directors of the Bedford Education Foundation.

My personal values are openness and transparency in government, responsiveness to the public, which means being a good listener, and being willing to keep an open mind.

If you would like to learn more about my qualifications and experience, please visit my website On March 11, I would appreciate your vote.

Thank you.
