Bedford students to salute veterans with Memorial Day program

To the Editor:

You are cordially invited to attend the annual Memorial Day program presented by our Pod 7 South students at Ross A. Lurgio Middle School. The program will take place Thursday, May 21, from 12:30-2 p.m. in the Bedford High School Theater.

Throughout the year, our seventh graders study, among other things, the American Revolution, the Civil War, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights, essay and poetry writing, and public speaking skills. Through class discussions and writings, they analyze literature, movies, poems and songs all related to the theme of patriotism. The goal is for students to understand the rights and responsibilities of citizenship and to identify what it means for them, personally, to be an American. The Memorial Day presentation is the culminating project where students demonstrate what they have learned through the writing of essays, poems, and letters to soldiers, performance of patriotic songs, multimedia presentations, and the creation of their own patriotic T-shirts.

This is the seventeenth year of this interdisciplinary unit, and each year the presentation is unique as the students use their talents and interests to form their own special performance.

We would be honored if you could join us to salute our Bedford veterans.
