Help the Milford DI teams

Remember this bumper sticker?

“It will be a great day when our schools get all the money they need and the Air Force has to hold a bake sale to buy a bomber.”

Well, we all know that day has yet to come and more proof of that comes with the fact that the Milford Destination Imagination teams have to hold fund-raising events so that they can get to the global competition in Tennessee.

But it’s all right because it gives you a chance to be part of the team. Sort of. No, you don’t get to go to Tennessee, which is not necessarily a huge disappointment for you, but you can go to two fund-raising events at which you will be helping the kids and having a good time.

The first is June 4, a live comedy show at Chunky’s theater in Nashua. Comedy is fun, if it’s funny. But even if it isn’t, the $20 you spend for tickets will help the teams. And the tickets can be purchased at Toadstool or Consigning for Good, both in Milford, and both worthy places to shop in their own right.

Then on June 11, you can have dinner at Margarita’s in Nashua, tell the wait staff that you are there to support DI, and the restaurant will donate 15 percent of your bill to the teams. So eat well.

Really, Destination Imagination is great for kids and great for the country because it gets youngsters involved in creative engineering and in these United States, we need more creativity and many, many more engineers.

So do what you can.

And remember the conversation between Victor Lazlo and Rick Blaine in “Casablanca”:

VICTOR: I try.

RICK: We all try. You succeed.

That’s your goal, folks: To succeed in helping the Milford Destination Imagination teams. It could be the start of a beautiful friendship.
