Some things to ponder

• The usual warning has come down from Concord: If you go into the woods this time of year, put on bright orange clothing, especially fluorescent orange hats, vests or jackets. Yes, it’s hunting season and it’s time to be wary. Most hunters take care before they shoot, but not everyone out there is experienced, so best to be on your guard. Call it hiking defensively.

• Good for the Milford High School football and cheer programs that collected 691 pounds of food for the New Hampshire Tackling Hunger program and the state’s Food Bank. The food went to the Milford Share Outreach center.

• Oh, would this be convenient: Milford’s Wadleigh Memorial Library is hoping to set up a passport acceptance facility, which would add another location for getting that important document. Right now, you must go to a post office in the region, and the closest ones to us are in Nashua and Peterborough.

• Some Labor Day Parade good news: The parade committee ended up with a $4,000 surplus which, according to Brendan Philbrick and Jay Duffy, will make next year’s fundraising easier.

• And cheers for Souhegan High School senior Kate Lindsey who is organizing her second coat drive to support people in need. Last year, she collected 373 coats and is shooting for more this year. You can, of course, help by donating a coat. Or two. You can drop them off at Souhegan High, Amherst Middle School, Wilkins and Clark schools, Mont Vernon Village School, the Amherst, Mont Vernon and Milford libraries in boxes labeled “One Warm Coat.” Hurry, though. The drive ends Oct. 27.

• And also check out Susan Lynch’s new support group for bereaved parents that will meet once a month in Hollis’ Lawrence Barn starting Oct. 26. It’s called Helping Parents Heal, and it’s a nonprofit with chapters in 24 states. Contact her at susanlynch27@gmail.com or check out the Facebook page of Helping Parents Heal Southern NH.
