Bridge bill passes House, expected to pass Senate

To the Editor:

On Jan. 8, the bridge funding bill was passed with a unanimous vote of the New Hampshire House of Representatives.

The bill now moves to the Senate. I fully expect that it will have a majority support.

House Bill 684 will allow Amherst bridges to be repaired or replaced quickly and in advance of state funding being paid.

With the passage of this bill, bridges can be replaced, utilizing local funds in the short term and be reimbursed from the state aid fund at a later date.

Currently, the state reimburses communities at 80 percent of the cost.

While local funds may be used in the short term, both the towns and the state benefit in that work can be preformed at a lower cost and the bridge quickly restored to public travel.
