Support for Best Buddies appreciated

To the Editor:

Recently, my husband and I held a fundraiser for the Milford High School chapter of Best Buddies. From the Best Buddies website: “Founded in 1989 by Anthony K. Shriver, Best Buddies® is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).” The Fundraiser was in honor of our daughter Brooke’s 16th birthday. Brooke has Down syndrome, and is a Buddy at the high school. Best Buddies is a wonderful, inclusive organization, and Brooke is thriving socially because of it.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank a number of people and businesses that helped make our fundraiser a tremendous result. Milford VFW Post 4368 generously donated the use of their hall for our fundraiser. Kelly Greska provided the music and entertainment that kept everyone, teens AND adults, dancing through the entire night. Carole Whittier from Carole’s Cake Creations provided the delicious cupcakes, as well as a beautiful cake for our daughter. We received generous raffle item donations from iRobot, Robins Egg, the Bourque Family, Dr. Craven and Milford High School, and Barbara and Jim Smith. Additionally, through the generosity of all the party attendees, we raised over $2000 for Milford High School Best Buddies! This was beyond our wildest expectations, but knowing how amazing our community is, I shouldn’t be surprised! Finally, we need to thank Melissa Dietz, one of the wonderful teachers at Milford High School. Without her tireless efforts, there would not be a Best Buddies chapter at MHS.

So to all who donated, and to all the guests who helped make our daughters 16th birthday more memorable than we could have possibly thought, thank you so very much from the bottom of our hearts. You make us proud to be members of this community.
