Vote to expand role of assistant director

To the Editor:

I am writing to urge Brookline residents to support Warrant Article 10, which would make the Brookline Library’s assistant director’s position a full-time position.

In the past 10 years, Brookline’s population has grown significantly; in the same period, library circulation has increased 40 percent and the number of our card holders has likewise increased 40 percent. The library staff is doing more than ever before, and while coping with the huge increase in use, they also attempt to keep the library up to date with the latest technology and formats, meet new standards and the increasing demands of patrons, etc.

This is more and more of a daunting task, especially since during this great growth period there has been no increase in our administrative/supervisory staff. It takes time to evaluate emerging technologies, plan appropriate programs and respond to the ever-changing needs of our diverse population.

Please help the Brookline Library continue – and expand – its quality service by voting Yes for Warrant Article 10 – we need a full-time assistant director!
