HB’s Merryman signs with Iowa

As a highly recruited athlete during the 2014-15 NCAA recruitment period, Hollis Brookline High School senior Nicholas Merryman received coast-to-coast offers to compete Division 1 men’s gymnastics at Stanford University, University of Iowa, Ohio State University, University of Michigan and the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Naval Academies.

Following an arduous seven-week schedule of official NCAA tours at numerous universities, he began a two-week evaluation of his critical criteria. The decision-making process was very difficult, but in the final analysis it was the unique mix of academic opportunities, campus amenities, athlete support programs and practice facilities, NCAA coaching and his United States National Team aspirations that led Merryman to choose to be a University of Iowa Hawkeye in the Big Ten Conference.

"The University of Iowa’s academics fully support my ambition to pursue my M.D. degree," Merryman said. "The stellar world-class teaching hospital, which is right on Iowa’s campus, will offer fantastic medical research opportunities during my undergraduate years."

The two-time U.S.A. Gymnastics National Team member secured a full athletic scholarship from Iowa, a rarity in men’s gymnastics where each school only has 6.3 scholarships to spread across a typical roster of 20 gymnasts. The full scholarship provides up to five years of attendance during which he will compete four NCAA seasons for University of Iowa while completing his degree.

"I’m really excited to begin training in Iowa’s brand new $1.2 millio renovated gym.," Merryman said. "I believe this, in combination with personalized coaching from Coach (JD) Reive, will allow me to fully achieve my athletic goals with both University of Iowa and USA Gymnastics."

During the 2015 competition season in May, Merryman qualified at the Junior Olympics National Championships in Daytona Beach to both the two-day USA National Championships held in August 2015 in Indianapolis, as well as the two-day Winter Cup Challenge held in 2016.

At the USA National Championships in August, the Hollis Brookline high school honor student took home the prestigious gold medal on the Pommel Horse scoring a 13.4 (with a 14.7 start value) on Day 1 and 14.2 (15.0 start value) on Day 2.

Merryman will be starting in the fall at University of Iowa as a freshman biology major on a pre-medicine track. He is currently training at New England Academy of Gymnastics, coached by Cal Booker.
