McKinley Grimes receives award

TROY, N.Y. – Following the team’s first action of the spring semester, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athlete James McKinley Grimes of Bedford has been selected as the Men’s Tennis Singles Performer of the Week by the Liberty League.

Grimes, a Bedford High School graduate, won both his singles matches, defeating No. 1 players from The College of New Jersey and Stevens Institute of Technology – both on the road. Against TCNJ, he posted a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 win, though RPI eventually dropped the match, 5-4. The next day at Stevens, Grimes again won at No. 1 singles, 7-6, 7-5, in a 7-2 loss to the Ducks. He is now 2-2 in dual match play in 2015-16.

He also played doubles over the weekend, going 1-1 with playing partner Sherman Uyeno. They won at TCNJ, 9-8 (7-5), and lost at Stevens, 8-6.

Grimes, the Liberty League co-Rookie of the Year as a freshman, played No. 1 singles last season. He was 13-10 overall, including 10-7 in dual matches. He was the Liberty League Singles Performer of the Week twice and the ECAC Upstate Player of the Week twice en route to being named to the All-Liberty League First Team.

Barracudas swim team registration

Registration for the summer 2016 Bedford Barracudas swim team will be held on two nights: Tuesday, April 5, and Tuesday, May 3, both from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the McKelvie Intermediate School Cafeteria, 108 Liberty Hill Rd., Bedford.

Returning and new swimmers must register in-person on one of these dates – no mail-in or online registrations will be accepted. Please bring completed registration forms (one registration form and conduct clause per swimmer and one volunteer form per family) and payment in cash or check made out to "BST." The cost is $120 for each swimmer in a family.

New swimmers will be placed in a lottery, so each new family has an equal chance of obtaining a place on the team. Numbers will be given out at registration and families will be notified of their placement no later than May 15. There is an equal chance of getting spots on the team regardless of when a family registers.

The BST Registration and Open House provides a "one-stop shop" for registration, ordering team apparel, learning about sponsorship opportunities, and the required Parent Meet Job commitment. Please visit the team’s website at for registration forms and complete team details, or email
