College’s pinning ceremony celebrates 67 nursing students

MANCHESTER – In a ceremony dating to 1860, Saint Anselm College presented 67 senior nursing students with pins as symbols of their preparedness to serve as compassionate caregivers.

The annual "pinning" was celebrated April 23.

The ceremony recognizes the seniors’ pending completion of the rigorous baccalaureate nursing program. At commencement on Saturday, May 21, the students will be awarded the credential of Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). Upon completion of a licensing examination, the graduates will have earned the credential of Registered Nurse (RN).

The New Hampshire students are Sara Beaulieu, Hudson; Blain Taylor, Merrimack, Mary Boyer, Merrimack; Brooke Cormier, Windham; Elaina De Mello, Bedford; Tierney Dennehy, Bow; Colleen Duffy, Merrimack; Erin Duggan, Salem; Samantha Lamb, Nashua; Bianca Mancini, Salem; Felicia McKinnon, Concord; and Ashlynn Parkhurst, Columbia.

The Nursing Certification Licensing Exam (NCLEX) pass rate for Saint Anselm graduates is consistently among the highest in the state; it was 96.57 percent in 2015. Comparatively, the NCLEX passing rate for New Hampshire was 84.5 percent in 2015; it was 87.02 percent at the national level.

In 2015, 98 percent of nursing students to graduate from Saint Anselm College were employed in their field within six months of graduation; 86 percent were employed in the first three months.

Earlier in the academic year, Saint Anselm College held its annual Blessing of the Hands for sophomore nursing students as they prepare to enter clinical practice.

The pin features elements of the college seal and the symbol of a lamp referring to Psalm 119:105, "Your word is a lamp of my steps and a light for my path."
