Bedford Jaguars Flag Red
The Bedford Jaguars Red team battled a very talented Manchester squad on Sunday morning in the opening contest of the 2016 season. Manchester got out to an early lead taking the second play of the their opening drive the distance for the score. Jeremy Desrochers made a huge stop on the opening play with a great flag pull before Manchester got on the board. Bedford then took the ball for their opening drive in an attempt to unleash the fury of the Jaguar. They used a persistent running attack which led to Connor Pitts taking the ball to the end zone, scoring the Jaguars first touchdown of the season in a crucial third down.
Manchester answered on their next two drives giving them the advantage going into halftime. Bedford benefited from the solid play of John Chhom and Wilson Quick on both sides of the ball as the half came to a close. The Jaguars took the opening possession of the second half and were able to put together their best drive of the game. With an emphasis put on blocking in the second half, the Jaguars were able to move the ball up the field for a first down thanks to running by Connor Pitts and Rordan Kemmerer. Unfortunately, the drive ended just short of the end zone and Manchester took over again.
Bedford’s defense also made great improvements in the second half holding Manchester to just one score. Cody Beyer, Paul Gaudreau, and Ishan Jain all grabbed flags forcing Manchester to dig deep in their final possession of the game. In the closing drive of the game, the Jaguars got solid running from Brian Gaudreau and Drew Burnett. Anthony Correnti tried to get outside on the last play of the game, but was stopped short by Manchester despite a great effort. Although it was a loss, the Jaguars had a lot to be proud of and will be poised for action Sunday.
Bedford Jaguars Flag Yellow
The Bedford Jaguars Yellow Flag team kicked off the 2016 campaign on Sunday morning, taking on the visiting Manchester West Raiders in front of a capacity crowd at Bedford HS. The Jags sent a message on the game’s very first play, with Gavin Villarante taking the handoff from Bryce D’Urso and streaking up the right sideline behind blocks from Cole Thibodeau and Brayden Lyon for the score. Not to be outdone by the offense, the defense stepped up too, with Noah Lawless grabbing a flag for a loss on the team’s first defensive play, and big stops by Ben Lu, Aiden Klardie, and Denys Savenko frustrating Manchester runners.
The teams exchanged possessions once more before Manchester punched in a score, tying the game. Bedford Yellow’s second score came on fourth down after a long, methodical drive landed them in the shadow of the goal posts. Bryce D’Urso darted left, then right, then sprinted over the goal line to put the Jags up by a score. Manchester responded quickly, tying the game at the half.
The second half was a defensive battle, until Brendan Leung broke free for a long score to put the Jags up once again. With the clock winding down, the Jags turned to their defense to preserve the lead. Defensive ends Nathan Dunker and Ryder Proulx repeatedly flew off the edge and into the Raider backfield, funneling runners inside where their flags were gobbled up like Sunday brunch.
The Jags flag teams return to Bedford High for games on Aug. 28 and Sept.11, all at 8 a.m.
