Souhegan loses finale to Hollis Brookline

AMHERST – The Hollis Brookline football team did not have the hottest start to their season, losing their first five games. At that point, it was clear to first-year head coach Rich Bergskaug that simply showing an improvement would signify a good season.

In the Cavaliers’ regular season finale at Souhegan on Friday night, Bergskaug could measure how far his team had really come.

Matt Ferenczhalmy wrapped up his 1,000-yard season with a five-touchdown performance, leading Hollis Brookline to a commanding 34-6 victory over the Sabers.

After the game, an emotional Bergskaug was showered in Gatorade by some of his players before addressing a clearly excited team.

“From the beginning I’ve said it doesn’t matter if we’re 0-10 or 10-0,” Bergskaug said, “It’s all about the experience that these guys have and taking these guys from boys to men. I can now honestly say that I’ve got a fine group of men.”

The Cavaliers relentless running attack, backed by a superb effort by the team’s entire offensive line, helped set the tone for Hollis Brookline.

The Cavaliers compiled 336 rushing yards, 59 of which were run by Wyatt Farwell and 217 of contributed by Ferenczhalmy. The junior running back, who entered the season coming off shoulder surgery, scored each of Hollis’s touchdowns on runs of less than six yards before exploding for a 22-yard score late in the fourth quarter.

“He’s just an animal,” Bergskaug said, “He’s done everything we’ve asked him to. He’s a fine young man and I’m so proud of him.”

Souhegan had a difficult time getting any rhythm on offense early in the contest. There were four penalties against the Sabers in their first four possessions, and an interception by Hollis Brookline helped sustain the visiting team’s momentum.

“It’s weird because we’ve been a very disciplined team all season,” Souhegan coach Mike Lochman said.

“Record wise we’re not necessarily where we wanted to be, but in term’s of discipline we’re typically very good. It’s disappointing because we would get something going and that would stall because of our own mistakes.”

Andrew Prescott ran for 98 yards for Souhegan. Quarterback Isaac Nevrla completed six passes for 55 yards, including a touchdown to Jerrell Duguay Webster.
