Souhegan can’t hold late lead, falls to Trinity

MANCHESTER – Senior Trevor Barrett led the Souhegan High School football team with a receiving touchdown, an interception and a 69-yard kickoff return in a 28-24 loss to Trinity on Friday night at Gill Stadium.

“Trevor is a guy that is a model citizen on our team,” said Sabers head coach Mike Lochman. “He takes every drill seriously in practice. He works very hard.”

Souhegan led by two, 24-22, in the fourth quarter but then junior Saikou Bah intercepted a pass for Trinity and returned it to the Souhegan 48-yard line with 5:39 left in the game. Bah scored the winning touchdown for the Pioneers (4-2) from 35 yards out with 3:56 left in the game to give Trinity the 28-24 victory.

Bah started the scoring as he would find the back of the end zone from 71 yards out on the first play from scrimmage. Junior captain and running back Nick Perdue added the two-point conversion to give the Pioneers the early 8-0 lead.

The Sabers (3-3) responded as junior quarterback Michael Mancini connected with Barrett for a 14-yard touchdown and senior kicker Alex Bedard added the PAT to cut the Trinity lead to 8-7 with 10:25 left in the opening half.

Souhegan’s defense then forced a three and out. The Sabers got the ball back at their own 36-yard line and reeled off a five-play drive that covered 64 yards and came to a finish with senior fullback Tyler Howard running into the end zone from 42 yards out. Bedard added the PAT with 6:09 left in the second quarter to send the Sabers into the break with a 14-8 edge.

“We ran the ball inside very well,” said Lochman. “We got a great performance from Tyler Howard and (Cameron) Kinney, sort of opening things up for Tyler at times.”

The Sabers extended the lead on the first drive of the second half, as Howard found the back of the end zone from 1 yard out. The play before, the Sabers were looking at a third-and-7 to go and Mancini tossed the ball behind the line of scrimmage to junior Zachary Bossi, and Bossi connected for a 21-yard pass to Barrett to bring the Sabers to the Trinity 1-yard line. Bedard added the PAT to give the Sabers a 21-8 edge with 5:51 left in the third quarter.

Junior captain and
running back Will Sheppard returned the next kickoff 56 yards for the Pioneers and sophomore running back Jack McCahill finished the drive with a 15-yard touchdown run. Brennan Senecal added the PAT to make the score 21-15 in favor of the Sabers.

Barrett returned the next kickoff 69 yards to the Pioneers’ 11-yard line and the drive would conclude with a 27-yard field goal from Bedard to give the Sabers a 24-15 edge with 2:49 left in the third quarter.

Junior quarterback Hunter Hannon connected with senior captain and tight end Ryan Baldwin for a 7-yard touchdown pass and then Senecal added the PAT to make the score 24-22 Souhegan with 9:08 left in the game, setting the stage for Bah’s winning touchdown with 3:56 left in the contest to send Trinity to a 28-24 victory.
