Sabers blow past Cougars
AMHERST – Two rushing touchdowns from junior running back Cameron Kinney and two more from junior Brendan Cray (one receiving, one rushing) propelled Souhegan High School to a 53-21 victory against visiting ConVal on Senior Night.
Junior Zachary Bossi intercepted a pass in the end zone in the first quarter for the Sabers (4-3) and then two plays later, Cray took off with the ball on a 76-yard run to open the scoring. Senior kicker Alex Bedard added the PAT for a 7-0 Sabers’ lead with 8:32 left in the opening quarter.
The Sabers struck again when Kinney ran for a 21 yard touchdown to cap a three-play drive. Bedard added the PAT to make it 14-0 in favor of Souhegan with 5:10 left in the first quarter.
Kinney would find the end zone again with 17.2 seconds left in the opening quarter from 6 yards out and Bedard would add the PAT.
The Sabers were not finished scoring in the first quarter as sophomore fullback Tucker Aiello recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff. On the next play, junior quarterback Michael Mancini connected with senior Collin Dodge for a 25-yard touchdown to give the Sabers a 27-0 edge.
Junior wide receiver Brandon Carland would make his presence felt when he returned the next kickoff 85 yards to put ConVal (1-6) on the board. Sophomore kicker Trevor Hanley would add the PAT to make the score 27-7 Souhegan at the end of the first quarter.
After forcing a turnover on downs, the Sabers would get the ball back at their own 28 with 5:46 left in the opening half. Two plays later Mancini would connect with Bossi for a 68-yard touchdown to extend the Sabers lead to 33-7 with 4:51 left in the half.
ConVal would respond with a seven-play drive that covered 74 yards and came to an end when senior quarterback John Crowley found sophomore wide receiver Liam Baldwin for a 19-yard touchdown on a third-and-8 play.
Hanley would add the PAT to bring ConVal to within 33-14 with 2:40 left in the half.
The Sabers would start their next drive at their own 42. Kinney got the drive started on the right foot as he ran for 18 yards to bring the Sabers to ConVal’s 40. The drive concluded with Mancini connecting with Cray for a 14-yard touchdown. Bedard added the PAT with 41.6 seconds left in the half.
ConVal would score on their first drive of the second half when Crowley connected with sophomore wide receiver James Stewart for a 48-yard touchdown and Hanley added the PAT to make the score 40-21 Souhegan with 7:46 remaining in the third quarter.
The Sabers would tack on two more touchdowns with senior fullback Tyler Howard finding the back of the end zone from 40 yards out (Bedard added the PAT) with 6:33 left in the third quarter and junior running back Jonathan Nogueira ran in from 5 yards out on a second and goal play with 3:04 left in the third to conclude the scoring.
