Milford takes 5th at tourney
Travis Hughes turned in one of the best matches of the day, as he went to double overtime to defeat Dean Tech’s Philip Fernandez 2-1 in the 285-pound final at Saturday’s Milford/Souhegan Wrestling Tournament. The Spartans finished fifth as a team.
Milford had two other wrestlers reach the finals, as Michael Pellitteri (152) and Jake Ricca (170) both came in second. Ricca, who lost to Nashua North’s John Sweeny in the 170 final, won one of the more entertaining matches of the day in the semifinals, as he beat Jalen Cruz of Dean Tech in triple overtime.
Merrimack had five wrestlers reach the final and went home with one first place, as Lucas Gardenour defeated Winchester’s Mike Conley, 9-0, in the 220 final. Brendan Parr came in second at 113 pounds for the Tomahawks, as did teammates Shawn Hebert (138), Jared Serrentino (182) and Shane Heath (195).
Souhegan also had wrestlers participate in the tournament, but none placed.
